A USB Microscope camera suitable for Linux
Here is high quality a USB microscope camera at a reasonable price. It is truly universal video camera (uvc) compliant in contrast to many "no-name" brands are not uvc compliant. It will be very difficult or even impossible to be use a non-compliant model with Linux, for example I have not been able to use a USB microscope based on an iPassion 1b3b:2938 chip and an email to the manufacturer was ignored. Celestion is completely different. The command "luvcview -L" brings up the various display modes. To run the program with say 800x600 resolution, just use the command "luvcview -f yuv -s 800x600". An even better program to use is guvcview. Unless you are using the Ubuntu operating system this program needs to be compiled into the kernel. Physically, the Celestron USB microscope camera is designed to slide directly into your microscope lens barrel. Hardware good; Software good
In spite of previous reviews about poor software, I chose to try this out anyway. I found everything to be exactly as advertised. The harware fits precisely. To operate, you simply plug in the USB connector. The other controls are the usual focusing operations found on the microscope itself. The software works well on my old Dell desktop upgraded to Win 7. It installed and launched without a problem. On first use I had to go into the Setup menu to tell the program which type of device I was using. Focusing and use then went smoothly. Completely satisfied.

I bought this and the 10x/20x combo loupe (no illumination) from the same manufacturer. The combo loupe is a great value - half the price of this one - but I will probably use this most of the time. The lens is bigger in this one, and the two LED illumination is invaluable. The product is not of the highest quality, but the basic function is perfect and the price can't be beat. If you are looking for something for daily use that will last for years, this isn't it, but if you are looking for a fully functional tool that you will use occasionally, I recommend without reservation.

The square root trick
Well, it's a handy little gadget, and the LED light is excellent, and the price is great. BUT - I wish this and most of the other loupes on offer would be honest about the magnification. You'd need at least a low-end microscope, maybe a hand-held, to get 20x or 30x magnification. What this thing has, I believe, is 4.47x - square root of 20 - that is, 20x by AREA not by dimension, the standard optical definition of magnification.You can easily do a rough check on this: make a short black line on paper, about 1/4 inch long: take good note of how it looks: now look through the loupe: alternate direct view and loupe view. I think you'll find the difference appears to be somewhere in the 4 - 5 times region. Similarly, loupes advertised as 30x are probably 5.57xHence only 3 stars. But I do like it nonetheless!

It's not 30x
This is a good little magnifier at a terrific price, but it is not 30x, and I don't know why it says it is. I have two other loupes, one that's 10x, and one that has both 15x and 20x, and this one seems to magnify a little better than the 10x. So, if you need high power, this isn't the magnifier you want. It is very easy to use, with a nice large diameter viewing area, and worth the price, but beware if you need higher power.

For the money, the is a fairly decent magnifying glass. Don't really expect it to be thirty power, though. It is more or less ten power as far as I can figure by comparing it to several expensive Hastings triplets I own.Where they got the "approximately 30x" from is anyone's guess unless they were trying to rate the thing by area magnification as opposed to linear magnification. In this case they got the formula wrong.Magnifiers are usually rate linearly, in that a 2x magnifier should make a one inch line appear two inches. This is the same as binoculars and other magnifying instruments though there is some kind of convention, I believe, of a standard ten inches with reading glass magnifiers.Whatever--the thing does have glass lenses as far as I can tell and it comes in a nifty little plastic box. It is a great little lens for a geology student or a nature buff and, at the price, makes a novel little gift.

I bought this eyepiece for my Celestron Microscope. I was disappointed when I unpacked it because the case is made from plastic and it looked cheap. Optically, however, it performs very well with no visible distortion across the field of view. I would have liked to have a case in which to store it. I can recommend this product.
